The World and Story

Enter a broken, conquered, and occupied world in How to Fight a Tyrant.

In other games, you'll find yourself in a time of peace with faint whispers of darkness, or a time of war and strife and a mission to defeat the encroaching foes. In How to Fight a Tyrant, we flipped the script. The bad guys have already won. You're job is to figure out what to do about it. Maybe your party wants to defeat the demonic invaders and send them back to the pits of hell. Or, maybe not. Maybe you and your comrades have more materialistic and greedy aims, where supplanting the demons and taking over their exploiting and subjugating operations in your true goal. You can even make peace with the demons and betray them to become the dark rulers of the empire. Who are we to tell you what to do?

The Worlds of Bipseria and Brutalia

The lands of humans, elves, dwarves, and other (somewhat) peaceful, sentient creatures enjoyed centuries of calm and prosperity, developing their own subcontinent, known in the common tongue as Bipseria, and trading with other kingdoms across the sea. Major advancements were made in astronomy and the sciences at the observatories, laboratories, and inventor's workshops of Darklight Celest, the City of the Stars. Xor, the enchanted magical headquarters for all types of wizards and magicians named after the God of Sorcery,  stood as perhaps the single place on the planet with the most concentrated magical power. And, in the capital city of Lorsperov, the heir apparent to Bipserian Empire had begun to dream of ways to convert the monarchical empire to a democratic republic.

All of this was destroyed, lost, or stolen when the passageways from the hells opened and the demonic invasion began. The Bipserians fought valiantly, many of them fighting to the last man and woman. Alas, the combined martial, magical, and clandestine might of the surface dwellers fell to the seemingly endless onslaught of demons, devils, and the fallen angels, who betrayed the heavens to deal out judgment on the humans that they believed was millennia overdue.

What Now?

The bad guys have taken over. The demons, devils, undead, and corrupted angels run the show across the land, with a few areas standing as holdouts and survivor enclaves scattered through the empire. The Unholy Emperor, entrenched in the Royal Palace in the capital, and his Dark Council based out of the corrupted Holy City of Vallian, control the demonic Brutal Legion with an iron fist, and are searching for something, though no one knows exactly what.

What you do is entirely up to you. Do you and your fellow survivors want to rid the world of the dark forces and restore things to the way they were? Maybe you want to displace the Legion and take over their savage and exploitive operations. Or, the Legion could be replaced with someone a little more...brutal. It's up to you and your party. But don't expect any of this to be easy...
