What is this new system?
Let's call it the Tyrant System. Instead of rolling to see if your attacks hit their target (often with a hilariously low chance of success) like in traditional tabletop games, in the Tyrant System, your attacks just...hit. Imagine that world. Armor reduces damage taken. Isn't that what armor does? There is also a ton you can do when it isn't your turn, rather than just sitting there, passively watching your character get smacked in the face. You can evade attacks by dodging, blocking, or parrying them. You can shield, save, and intervene on your allies when they take hits. You can incapacitate attackers, or disappear before their very eyes. We also freed up the action economy a ton with things like multiple actions per turn; weapons with multiple attack speeds; and loads of abilities that do not require an action. How to Fight a Tyrant comes stocked with amazing classes each with a boatload of awesome, powerful, and interactive abilities built in, and a rogue's gallery of equally strong enemies to up the challenge quotient. No more standing there, missing with your attacks or casting a fizzled-out fire blast that does two damage, and then watching the next player do the same thing.
What is an action tabletop RPG?
Traditional RPGs are fun. They are. It's fun to pretend you're a half-orc barbarian that is a hopeless drunk with a big heart that also happens to crush the skulls of their enemies. But then the time comes for actually crushing skulls, and the traditional RPG experience just kind of...falls flat. We spent years trying to find the perfect character builds, specializations, subclasses, items, and more that would make the gameplay (especially the combat) of a TTRPG, you know, fun. It just isn't out there. So, we made it! Thus was born the action sub-genre of RPGS and with it our game, How to Fight a Tyrant.
HTFAT emphasizes gameplay, namely combat, that is dynamic, adaptive, and genuinely tactical compared to traditional RPGs. If you read the above segment about the Tyrant System, you've already started catching on, hopefully. We've stripped anti-fun things like accuracy, restrictive action economies, clunky spell systems, boring and underpowered classes/subclasses, lifeless enemies, and worthless items out of the game. In their place we've put in place things like action-free abilities, defensive maneuvers, critically-striking spells, and astonishingly powerful ultimate actions known as Legendary Abilities.
